The right sort of nonconformists?

Among the confusing but crucial distinctions that baffle many family historians are the denominational differences within religious dissent or nonconformity.   It is pointless (and irritating for the library staff) to write to a library which specialises in English Presbyterians and Unitarians about your Methodist ancestors.   They will not be able to help.   Fortunately, there are a number of useful guides published by the Society of Genealogists to help family historians understand the differences and to guide them to the relevant records.

Alan R. Ruston, My ancestors were English Presbyterians/Unitarians: how can I find out more about them? (London, 2001)
David J. H. Clifford, My ancestors were Congregationalists in England and Wales: with a list of registers (London, 1992)
E. H. Milligan and M. J. Thomas, My ancestors were Quakers: how can I find out more about them? (London, 1983)
G. R. Breed, My ancestors were Baptists: how can I find out more about them? (London, 1988)
W. Leary, My Ancestors were Methodists (London, 1999).

Dr Williams's Library is the pre-eminent research library of Protestant nonconformity.   It specialises in particular in English Presbyterianism, Unitarianism and, especially as a result of managing the Congregational Library on behalf of the Memorial Hall Trustees, Congregationalism. The education and careers of Congregational and English Presbyterian (later Unitarian) ministers for England and Wales can be searched online via The Surman Index Online (http://surman.english.qmul.ac.uk).
